Israeli tanks fired shells at the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, directly hitting one house and killing a Palestinian and wounding seven others, Palestinian security and rescue workers said.
The Israeli army launched artillery at empty fields in northern Gaza to deter terrorists from launching homemade Qassam rockets into Israel.
Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh condemned the attack.
"This is a dangerous Israeli escalation against the Palestinian people, the Palestinian government and the Palestinian Authority," Haniyeh's office said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press.
Terrorists, who have routinely launched rockets in recent days, fired several Tuesday morning, causing no injuries. In recent days, Israel has pounded open fields in Gaza that militants use as bases to launch the rockets.
Palestinian witnesses said Israeli tanks had been shelling near the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya throughout Tuesday afternoon.
Hospital officials said one person was killed in the attack, and seven others were injured, two seriously.
