Israel wins unexpected victory against Spain |

Jailed Palestinian uprising leader Marwan Barghouti called Saturday for President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party to open talks with the Hamas militants in charge of the Palestinian Cabinet to find a way to resolve the crises plaguing the Palestinians.
Barghouti, who is also a top Fatah leader, expressed his views in a statement published in all three Palestinian daily newspapers Saturday.
The Islamic Hamas won Jan. 25 Palestinian elections, defeating Fatah, which dominated Palestinian life for four decades. In response, the West and Israel cut off aid and transfers of money to the cash-strapped Palestinian Authority, demanding Hamas renounce violence and recognize Israel's right to exist. Abbas has also transferred power from the Cabinet to his office.
Barghouti said Fatah and Hamas should begin "a comprehensive and deep dialogue, because the dangers we are facing are tough."
The high-level talks should lead to a conference of all Palestinian factions, create a broad Palestinian consensus and possibly end in the creation of a government of national unity, he said. |
