Qatar pledges $50 million to Palestinian government
By: Associated Press
Published: April 18, 2006

Qatar announced Monday that it would give the Palestinians' Hamas-led government $50 million in aid in a bid to help make up the shortfall after the United States and the European Union withheld significant funding.

The Qatar News Agency, quoting an unidentified Foreign Ministry official, said the funds were offered to "bolster the budget of the Palestinian authority based on the decision of the Arab summit held in Khartoum" in March.

On Sunday, Iran for the first time said it was sending the same amount of money to the Palestinians to help fund the Hamas-led government.

The United States and the European Union have said that aid to the Palestinians would stop if Hamas refused to recognize Israel and renounce violence. The United States and EU consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
