The international Red Cross on Wednesday urged both Israel and Palestinians to respect international law and spare and protect civilians.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was alarmed by the number of civilians killed or injured in recent attacks in Israel and the Palestinian territories. These include two recent suicide attacks by Palestinians and Israeli shelling of the Gaza Strip.
Other acts of violence - such as the launching of rockets into Israel - are also endangering civilian lives, the ICRC said.
"International humanitarian law strictly prohibits attacks directed against civilians and civilian objects, and acts of violence intended to spread terror among the civilian population," the neutral agency said in a statement. "Civilians must not pay the price of conflict; any civilian loss of life, on either side, further fuels the conflict and generates more loss, suffering and grief."
International law also prohibits indiscriminate attacks and requires that a strict distinction be made between civilians and military objectives.
The ICRC added that it remains committed to its humanitarian work in Israel and the Palestinian territories. |
