The Arab League's secretary-general on Wednesday rejected the proposal of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for an international conference to jump-start stalled peace talks with Israel - for now.
"At one moment or another perhaps - not now - such an idea could be useful," Amr Moussa said.
Abbas called for an international conference during a visit to Oslo, Norway, where Israel and the Palestinians secretly negotiated a 1993 peace accord.
Moussa said there must "absolutely be negotiations" based on the principle of exchanging land for peace. He spoke after a meeting with French President Jacques Chirac.
He said that the two new governments, Palestinian and Israeli, "could agree on a new process, an active process" but stressed that "we must neither count on nor encourage unilateral measures."
Moussa was in Paris for a Euro-Arab forum that focused on tensions over the rise of the militant Hamas, which came to power last month.
Abbas visits Paris on Thursday and Friday. |
