Israel issued a stern warning to its citizens late Monday to stay away from Egypt's Sinai desert, citing an "increased threat of kidnapping of Israeli citizens on the Sinai coast."
The warning came after bombs rocked the Sinai resort of Dahab on May 4, killing 21 people. Islamic militants were blamed for the attacks. No Israelis were injured. In 2004, Islamic suicide bombers blew up a hotel in Sinai just across the Israeli border and a nearby vacation spot, killing 34 people, including 11 Israelis.
A statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said, "The anti-terrorism command strongly urges all Israelis in Sinai to leave immediately," calling the kidnap threat "concrete."
Israel has had travel warnings for Sinai in effect for more than a year, but the desert, which Israel returned to Egypt in 1982 under terms of their peace treaty, remains a favorite vacation spot for Israelis. |
