Stanford professor sues over book calling him terror supporter

A Stanford University professor identified on a book cover as a terrorism supporter is suing the book's publisher for illegally using his picture, according to a media report.

Middle East history professor Joel Beinin said in the federal lawsuit filed April 3 that he was unfairly targeted for his criticism of U.S. foreign policy in "Campus Support for Terrorism," a book co-authored by conservative publisher David Horowitz, the San Jose Mercury News report.

The book identifies liberal professors believed to be promoting anti-American agendas in their classes.

Beinin, a Jewish professor who has been criticized for his support of Palestinian rights, is one of four pictures on the cover of Horowitz's book.

"They have used my picture as part of their war on free expression," Beinin told the newspaper. "I have never, in any way, supported terrorism. I've spoken out against it. They're trying to intimidate people into silence."

Horowitz, president of Los Angeles-based publisher and political group Center for the Study of Popular Culture, said he is exercising his right to free speech and considers the suit harassment.

His groups and other conservative organizations say professors like Beinin share some responsibility for the Sept. 11 terror attacks for downplaying the dangers of Islamic extremism.

"I didn't say he was a terrorist. I said he supported terrorism," Horowitz told the Mercury News. "It is my view. If he doesn't like it, he can respond anytime he wants, instead of playing legal games."
