China on Tuesday called on the Hamas-led Palestinian government to recognize Israel's right to exist on the eve of a visit to Beijing by the Palestinian foreign minister.
"We urge Hamas to earnestly abandon violence, recognize Israel and accept the agreements already reached," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao, naming the three conditions that Israel and the West have imposed for negotiating with Hamas.
"China does not favor political isolation and economic blockade," he added.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar was due to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for a meeting of officials from China and 22 Arab governments and entities.
Zahar was also expected to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing.
Israel has formally protested China's invitation to Zahar, but Liu said Tuesday that China hopes their differences will not affect bilateral relations.
Zahar's China visit is part of an Asian tour that also includes visits to Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Iran. |
