Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday gathered with the PLO's powerful executive committee, where he was expected to win endorsement for a referendum on a plan implicitly recognizing Israel.
Abbas wants to hold the referendum to put pressure on the Hamas-led government to accept the plan, which calls for a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Hamas has demanded changes to the proposal and opposes the referendum, which is expected to win broad public support.
Abbas set a Tuesday deadline for Hamas to accept the proposal. However, Yasser Abed Rabbo, a top Abbas aide, said the president would consider extending the deadline for several days to give Hamas more time to decide.
Abbas spoke to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas for more than an hour late Tuesday, but said the the two men could not resolve their differences. Haniyeh lives in the Gaza Strip and is barred by Israel from traveling to the West Bank. |
