King Abdullah II of Jordan arrived in Saudi Arabia Wednesday for talks with his Saudi counterpart on the eve of his meeting with Israel's prime minister, Saudi Foreign Ministry officials said.
Saudi King Abdullah met the Jordanian leader at Riyadh airport, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the press.
Saudi Arabia's state-guided press has said the two kings will discuss bilateral ties and the Middle East situation, but the main item on their agenda is likely to be Arab aspirations for a revival of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and the direction such negotiations should take.
The Jordanian king is to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Amman on Thursday. He is expected to press the Israeli leader to start talks with the Palestinians and also to warn him against any attempt by the Jewish state to define its borders unilaterally.
Olmert has said that if peace talks with the Palestinians ultimately fail, his government would itself demarcate Israel's borders with the Palestinians. |
