German Economics Minister Michael Glos arrived in Israel Wednesday at the head of a large delegation of German business leaders to kick off the inaugural meeting of the Israel-German business council, a spokesman from the German Embassy said.
Cristoph Blosen, the embassy spokesman, said some 40-50 businessmen arrived with Glos to visit and improve an already fruitful business relationship between the two countries.
Germany is Israel's second largest trading partner, trailing only the United States. German-Israel trade reached some $4.7 billion in 2005. Israeli business officials estimated that trade could reach as high as $5.5 billion by 2011.
In his three-day visit, Glos will also meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Trade and Industry Minister Eli Yishai and Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz.
German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel is also currently in Israel on a three-day visit. As is customary for first-time visits to Israel, the two German ministers on Wednesday visited Yad Vashem, Israel's memorial to the Holocaust. |
