Villepin says only negotiations can solve Mideast problems

Only negotiations can solve the crisis in the Middle East, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said Wednesday during a visit by his Israeli counterpart, Ehud Olmert.

Villepin told parliament: "Only a just peace, based on a political solution and negotiations, can ensure a lasting security and future for Israel and the peoples of the region."

Olmert also addressed members of the National Assembly, France's lower house, after meeting French President Jacques Chirac.

"Israel, under my leadership, wants peace, and is prepared to make a great effort," Olmert said. "It's time to make peace in the Middle East ... through negotiations, or if there are no conditions for negotiations, then without them."
