Five Palestinians on trial before a Jordanian military court pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges of plotting to launch attacks on Israel.
The defendants -- all from the northern refugee camp of Irbid -- were also charged with illegal possession of weapons and attempting to infiltrate Israel.
Khaled Ahmed Nasri, 29; Firas Al-Rifai, 32; Amer Jar'ah Abdullah, 20; Osama al-Mahdawi, 25; and Mohammed Tayseer Naif, 17, were charged with "carrying out acts which could expose the kingdom to danger of aggressive acts and jeopardize its ties with a foreign country."
The charge sheet said Nasri had planned to go to Iraq to fight the Americans, but decided instead to attack Israel after facing obstacles to his original plan.
Nasri recruited the four other men and they began to explore the Jordanian-Israeli border to select a crossing point and acquired machine guns, the indictment said.
Nasri and Rifai made a failed attempt to cross into Israel, the date of which was not given. They returned to Irbid and were arrested with the other three on January 8, 2006 after their weapons were discovered in the garden of a house near Irbid.
The trial was adjourned until next Wednesday. |
