Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian militant early Wednesday during an army arrest operation in the West Bank city of Nablus, the army and Palestinians said.

The soldiers saw the armed Palestinian and shot toward him, the army and Palestinian witnesses said. The shooting sparked an exchange of fire in which another Palestinian militant was wounded, the witnesses said.

The dead man was identified as Daoud Katouni, 20, a member of the militant Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, which is affiliated with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party, the group said.

The Israeli army said that Katouni was responsible for masterminding an suicide bombing in the West Bank on March 30 in which four Israelis were killed, and for involvement in other attacks.

Israel carries out nightly arrest raids against Palestinian militants in Nablus, which is known as a hotbed of anti-Israeli activity.
