The Israeli army will not halt its policy of firing airborne missiles at Palestinian militants despite recent mistakes that killed five civilians in two days, the air force chief said Thursday.

Most recently on Wednesday, an errant missile aimed at a militant responsible for firing rockets at Israeli towns instead hit a house, killing two Palestinian civilians. A day earlier, three children were killed in another Israeli attack gone wrong.

Maj. Gen. Eliezer Shakedi, Israel's air force commander, said despite the recent mistakes, air strikes remain the most accurate way to fight militants.

"We have to make a great effort to try everything possible to avoid hitting civilians," Shakedi told Israel's Army Radio. "We have to fight terrorism and we are doing it ... this is more or less the central alternative, the most accurate and the best possible alternative without entering a broad and very significant (ground) operation."
