Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with Hamas Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh late Sunday, for talks on the fate of an Israeli soldier captured earlier by Palestinian gunmen and for a fresh effort by Abbas to get Hamas to accept a proposal that would implicitly recognize Israel and help get peace talks restarted, Deputy Prime Minister Nasser Shaer said. There was no confirmation from Abbas' office.
Shaer had earlier called publicly for the release of the young soldier, snatched and taken into Gaza by Palestinians after they killed two Israeli soldiers in a pre-dawn raid into Israel. |
