Pope Benedict XVI appealed Thursday for the release of all people kidnapped in the Holy Land and urged Israel and the Palestinians to seek a negotiated solution to their conflict.
"I am following with worry what is happening in the Holy Land and I pray that every kidnapped person be promptly returned to his family," the pope said.
The pope did not identify anyone held hostage.
Israeli troops have opened a military campaign in Gaza to win the release of an Israeli soldier held by Hamas gunmen.
Benedict said only a negotiated solution can assure peace and appealed to Israeli and Palestinian officials, with the help of the international community, to seek one. |
