An Israeli government spokesman said Tuesday that an Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants is still alive though injured.

"We know that up to now, Gilad Shalit is alive. We know that he is injured, that he was seen by a Palestinian doctor a few days ago," spokesman Avi Pazner said on the French news channel LCI.

Shalit has dual Israeli-French citizenship, and the French government has joined Israel in pressing for his release.

On Monday, the militants had indicated they might kill the 19-year-old soldier. On Tuesday, they said they would give no further information about him because Israel ignored a deadline to release Palestinian prisoners.

"We do not give in to blackmail," Pazner said.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rejected any negotiations with the militants, and the army pressed ahead with its Gaza offensive.

On Monday, the pan-Arab newspaper Al Hayat reported that a security team from Egypt, which has been part of efforts to mediate the soldier's release, had visited the captured Israeli in Gaza. The newspaper said he was being treated by a Palestinian doctor for "three bullet wounds."
