Two Bedouin tribesmen were killed and three others severely wounded in a fire fight that broke out over financial dispute between two tribes in the south of the Sinai Peninsula, police said Tuesday.
The clash occurred in el-Gharaanah district, about 6 miles north of the popular Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik, between members of the Gabali and Hemdan Bedouin, two of about a dozen tribes of semi-nomadic Bedouins who live in the peninsula.
A police official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media said that a police force was sent to halt the fighting and that officers made several arrests.
Doctor Said Eissa of Sharm International Hospital said that three men were brought to the hospital with bullet wounds, all in critical condition.
Trafficking weapons, drugs and artifacts in the peninsula or with neighboring Israel and Jordan is common among the tribes living in the Sinai -- a favored destination among tourists that was targeted by several terrorist attacks that killed more than 60 people over the past year.
A police crackdown against terror suspects has also killed several tribesmen. |
