Israel took an unassailable 3-1 lead over Britain on Sunday, moving Israel into a playoff later this year for a place in the World Group of the Davis Cup.
The loss means Britain will face Ukraine in a relegation playoff.
Israel clinched the best-of-five tie when Noam Okun defeated Jamie Delgado 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 2-6, 6-3. Alan Mackin of Britain was to play Andy Ram in the meaningless fifth match.
Andy Murray, the 19-year-old Scotsman and Britain's top player, pulled out with a neck and shoulder injury picked up playing doubles on Saturday.
Murray and Delgado lost that match to give Israel a 2-1 lead going into Sunday's reverse singles.
Delgado filled in for Murray against Israel No. 1 Okun. |
