Oil prices fall slightly after weekend of Mideast violence

Oil prices fell slightly Monday in early trading following a weekend that saw an escalation of violence in the Middle East when an Israeli bomb killed at least 56 Lebanese.

The market has been focusing on the nearly three weeks of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, fearful of possible supply interruptions in the region, particularly from Iran, OPEC's No. 2 supplier and a backer of Hezbollah.

Sunday's attack in Lebanon prompted U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to cut short her Mideast diplomatic mission. Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora demanded a cease-fire and said talk of a larger peace package must wait until the firing stops.

The AP contributed to this report.
