Amos Harel, analyst for Haaretz, discussed the price of the Olmert government's last minute "hail mary" play:
"What changed between Wednesday and Friday, besides the fact that an agreement was reached in the interim? It was hard to get a convincing explanation on Saturday from the government. If the Security Council resolution is realized, Israel can credit itself with several accomplishments - topped by distancing Hezbollah from the south and getting the Lebanese Army to come down there, aided by French troops. From an operational standpoint, Israel would achieve very little by two more days of fighting. Is the blow to morale that Hezbollah would sustain with the soldiers' arrival at the Litani worth the soldiers killed and still to be killed in the name of achieving that objective?"
