Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at a home in a northern Gaza refugee camp late Monday, lightly wounding two bystanders, medical officials said.
The owner of the home, an activist with the Islamic Jihad militant group, was not home at the time. The owner, Hashem Asliya, 45, said he had been warned by the army shortly before the airstrike to leave the house. He said his son, Mohammed, suffered a broken leg while jumping out of the home at the time of the attack.
"Even if they killed me and my family, resistance must continue. We will not stop the fight," he said. Islamic Jihad, a radical group backed by Iran and Syria, has carried out numerous suicide bombings and rocket attacks against Israel.
The army said the home had been used to store weapons.
Israel has been conducting an offensive in Gaza for nearly two months since militants crossed the border and captured an Israeli soldier. The soldier still has not been freed.
About an hour after the attack in northern Gaza, Israeli aircraft struck the home of another Hamas activist in southern Gaza. The man also said he had been warned ahead of time to leave the premises. No one was injured.
The Israeli army confirmed the airstrikes, saying early Tuesday that it was targeting arms storage facilities. The army also confirmed that in both cases it warned residents of the buildings to leave, saying it wanted to avoid civilian causalities. |
