Revered Israeli Rabbi Ovadia Yosef has been hospitalized for chest pains but is in good condition, his family said Thursday.

Yosef, who is highly respected among Jews of Middle Eastern descent, had flown to northern Israel to address a conference when, after landing, he complained that he felt a tightening in his chest, said a relative, Yitzhak Sudri. Yosef was evacuated to a hospital in the northern town of Nahariya, where he spent the night, Sudri said.

"He feels excellent this morning and should be released later today," Sudri said.

Yosef is the spiritual leader of the Shas political movement, a member of the ruling coalition.
