Malaysian peacekeepers to leave for Lebanon within a month: report
By: Associated Press
Published: October 1, 2006

Malaysian troops will join the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon within a month, local media reported Sunday.

Malaysia has informed the world body of its acceptance of a place in the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying by the national news agency, Bernama.

The mostly Muslim Southeast Asian nation said on Sept. 20 that it has been invited to send 360 troops -- 200 to perform administrative duties at the UNIFIL headquarters and 160 to be part of a peacekeeping and quick reaction force.

"Our personnel should be leaving within one month of the U.N. invitation," The Sunday Star newspaper quoted Najib, who is also defense minister, as saying.

They are currently assessing the situation in Lebanon and identifying locations to station the troops, the newspaper said.

Defense officials could not be reached Sunday to comment on the report.

Under a U.N.-brokered cease-fire following fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, as many as 15,000 peacekeepers are to be deployed in southern Lebanon.

Malaysia, which previously offered to send as many as 1,000 troops, has said it remains ready to dispatch more peacekeepers if asked to do so.
