Bahrain's foreign minister, who is pushing for a renewal of Mideast peace efforts, is expected to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank on Wednesday, Abbas' office announced.

Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa's visit will be the first by a senior official from Bahrain to the West Bank.

The foreign minister will meet with Abbas at his Ramallah headquarters on Wednesday morning. Later in the day, Abbas is to hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is touring the region.

Bahrain has taken a leading role among moderate Arab regimes to pressure Hamas to accept peace with Israel.

At the U.N. General Assembly last month, Al-Khalifa called for initial negotiations between Israel and the Arabs with a concrete time frame, as well as a report from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the best way to hold those talks.
