An Israeli air plane fired a missile at a car carrying Hamas operatives in the Zeitun neighborhood of the Gaza Strip, eyewitnesses say.

An elderly man was seriously wounded and eight others were injured in the attack, including two members of Hamas' military wing, the Izz el-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed the attack.

Eyewitnesses said the injured elderly was on a cart pulled by a donkey when the rocket slammed into a Toyota car carrying the Hamas operatives.

The attack came hours after the government meeting in Jerusalem where Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz said the army has the green light to act against gunmen responsible for Qassam fire.

Three Sderot residents were injured Sunday morning in a Qassam attack. A man was seriously injured while two others sustained light wounds. Hamas' military wing claimed responsibility for the attack.

Hanan Greenberg contributed to this report.
