Bar Rafaeli is back in Israel, and the tabloids, after a hiatus. But this time it's her new Muslim American beau -- 35-year-old world surfing champion Kelly Slater -- making the splash, at least with the local cops.
Israeli police detained Slater after he reportedly shoved a cameraman attempting to snap a picture of the celebrity couple on their way out of a hotel in Herzliya in the wee hours of the morning. Although the hotel is on the seafront, they had not been surfing, at least not waves.
Slater was invited down to Herzliya's police station but was eventually released, AP reported. No charges are known to have been filed.
Apparently Rafaeli is over her diminutive celebrity ex, Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom she recently broke up after 18 months. After Leo had an altercation with the local paparazzi, the tender Bar vowed never to bring her boyfriends back to Israel, where the press, she said, has a lot of "chutzpah." But, as Bar learned from Leo, promises are made to be broken.
Now, after dissing her native land in the local and foreign press, the Israeli model is apparently riding bigger waves. Even though she "made out big" -- her words -- by dodging the draft in Israel, perhaps she should consider a basic training course to keep up with her new boyfriend's escapades.
Slater, a follicley-challenged American of Syrian extraction, was in Israel for a program called Surfing for Peace and One Voice, which recently was forced to cancel a hugely-promoted peace concert after the Palestinians gave in to threats of violence from other Palestinians not to fraternize with Israelis. The champion surfer gained his fame in the early nineties when his skills on the board brought him into the limelight and led him to eight world championship titles.
The Syrian Stallion also has managed to garner some experience with high profile beauties like Pamela Anderson, Cameron Diaz, and Gisele Bundchen, another DiCaprio ex. Evidently Slater likes Leo's leftovers.
No comment from Bar's notoriously protective parents about the possibility of a halal wedding or a little Syrian-Israeli surfer dude on the way.
Perhaps this new sheet-surfing relationship is Bar's personal contribution to peace with Syria. As she said in past interviews -- what's the point of having a Jewish state if you can live in New York City?
Damascus, we know, doesn't really have a beach, but we hear there's a little town in northeast Syria where some Israelis recently made a splash. Kowabunga!
