The man convicted for assassinating Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin will be punished for having physical contact in his cell with the woman he says he has married, a prison spokeswoman said Thursday.
The woman, Larisa Trimbobler, kissed Yigal Amir on the cheek during a visit to his cell Thursday, Prison Service's spokeswoman Orit Stelser said.
Amir returned the kiss and the two started hugging and fondling each other before a prison warden intervened, Stelser said.
Amir, who is serving a life sentence for shooting Rabin three times in the back at a peace rally in 1995, will be punished for violating prison rules, Stelser said. He could lose his visitation rights or be isolated, she said.
Trimbobler and Amir, who are both Orthodox Jews, insist they were married secretly over the phone by a rabbi last year.
But rabbis and the Prison Service dispute the claim, saying the wedding was not valid according to Jewish law because Amir was not joined by two witnesses. Prison officials have barred him from consummating the marriage with Trimbobler.
Amir has asked the Supreme Court to overturn the prison service's refusal to let him marry. The publication a year ago of Amir's intention to marry caused an uproar since many Israelis believe Amir should receive the worst punishment possible.
Amir, an ultranationalist Jew, said he killed Rabin to to stop the handover of land in Israeli-Palestinian peace deals and has shown no regret. The assassination was a major blow to peace efforts.
Trimbobler is a divorced mother of four. She immigrated from the former Soviet Union more than a decade ago, has been visiting Amir in prison every two weeks for several years. She reportedly has a doctorate in philosophy and has brought Amir many books on the subject.
