According to the watchdog group UN Watch, the latest UN Human Rights Council resolution concerning Sudan is shockingly weak, considering the seriousness of the humanitarian crisis and ongoing genocide there.
The UN and NGOs maintain that about 400,000 ethnic Sudanese have been systematically murdered by government-supported Arab rebels in the Darfur province. Another 2.5 million ethnic Sudanese have been displaced.
In response to the genocide and displacement, the Human Rights Council passed a resolution that expresses "concern regarding the seriousness of the human rights and humanitarian situation," without placing any responsibility or pressure on the Sudanese government which is funding and arming the groups responsible.
Contrary to a tough stance against the Sudanese government, UN Watch notes, "The resolution even 'welcomes' the Sudanese government's 'cooperation' with the UN, conveniently ignoring Khartoum's repeated refusals to admit the UN peacekeeping force mandated by the Security Council last August."
Sudan is a member of the powerful African, Arab and Islamic Group of the UN.
The group blocked slightly stronger language in the resolution which expressed 'grave concern' instead of just concern.
To date, the UN Human Rights Council has passed condemnatory resolutions eight times against Israel. It has not passed a condemnatory resolution against any other nation in the world, despite ongoing human rights abuses, violations, and known cases of genocide in various parts of the globe.
Israel is the only country in the UN that is not a permanent member of a UN group. |
