Al-Qaeda leader Khalid Sheikh Mohammed says he decapitated Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002, according to transcripts released Thursday.
Mohammed claimed Pearl had been working for Israel's Mossad secret service and had a relationship with the CIA when he was abducted in Pakistan in January 2002. Both allegations have been rejected by terrorism experts and by Pearl's newspaper colleagues.
The Pentagon initially withheld the section about Pearl's killing to allow time for his family to be notified, a Defense Department spokesman said.
Mohammed said: "I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. For those who would like to confirm, there are pictures of me on the Internet holding his head."
