Syria has postponed an event intended to counter the Annapolis summit, and will now be attending the upcoming peace conference, reported London-based Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat Sunday.
According to the report, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice assured Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem that the issue of the Golan Heights will be discussed at the upcoming Annapolis summit. Subsequently, Damascus agreed to postpone its National Convention and participate in the US-mediated peace parley.
Israel Radio reported that Syrian officials stated they would only attend Annapolis if the Golan Heights were discussed.
Al-Hayat reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki responded to Syria's delay of the National Convention by offering to host it in Iran, and emphasized the necessity to "hinder the Annapolis conference."
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, on the other hand, strongly supports Syria's attendance to Annapolis, Palestinian sources were quoted as saying in a report Saturday by Saudi newspaper Al Watan. The sources said that Abbas assured Rice, who then persuaded Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, of the importance of Syrian participation. According to the report, Abbas send a representative to the Syrian capital Friday to discuss the matter.
The Saudi newspaper also reported that there will be another international peace summit early in the new year, similar to the upcoming parley, that will concentrate on Israel and Syria. |
