After nearly a week of deliberation, the Bush administration has accepted Israel's offers of assistance to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, with a first shipment of supplies expected to be sent on Tuesday, Haaretz reported.
In the first stage, Israel is to deliver IDF-type "battle ration" field meals and preserved food, certified Kosher.
In addition, the IDF plans to send water, tents, generators, baby formula, diapers and bedding, Haaretz said.
In addition, a team of 25 volunteer medical, search-and-rescue and mental health workers organized by the "Israeli Flying Aid" group is set to take off for Louisiana on Tuesday.
"Israel was one of the first nations to offer relief aid, if not the first," said Israeli Ambassador to Washington Danny Ayalon. "Even if it will be modest aid, even if it will be symbolic aid, it is still very important," the Ambassador said.
Ayalon ordered the flag at the Israeli embassy in Washington lowered to half-staff in memory of the victims of the disaster.
Ayalon also reported that three missing Israelis were located, although the fate of two others remains uncertain.
