A new Israeli ambassador has assumed his duties in Jordan, the fifth envoy to the Arab kingdom since diplomatic relations were established under a peace treaty signed in 1994, an Israeli Embassy spokesman said Thursday.
Jacob Rosen presented his credentials to Khaldoun al-Talhouni, the secretary general of Jordan's foreign ministry, earlier Thursday, the official Petra news agency reported.
Rosen's credentials must be approved by Jordan's ruler, King Abdullah II -- a diplomatic formality since the nomination of a new ambassador is usually endorsed by the Jordanian government prior to the envoy's arrival in the kingdom.
Rosen replaces Yacov Hadas Handelsman, who ended his term last December, said Jacob Raber, the Israeli Embassy's press attache.
Appointing a new Israeli envoy was deferred until after the Israeli elections last March.
Rosen served as charge d'affaires at the embassy in Jordan shortly after relations were established 12 years ago, ending a formal state of war that existed since 1948.
A new Jordanian ambassador took office in Israel two months ago. Ali al-Ayed replaced Marouf al-Bakhit, who became prime minister last November.
Al-Ayed, 42, is a career diplomat. He served as charge d'affaires at the Jordanian Embassy in Washington from 1997 to 2001, and was then the foreign ministry spokesman in Amman. Before taking up his post in Israel, he handled political affairs at the prime minister's office.
