Merely a week after being formally reprimanded over the incident in which Israel Naval Ship Hanit was attacked by a missile during the Lebanon war, a senior naval officer was promoted in rank and station.
Defense Minister Amir Peretz approved three senior appointments in the Navy Tuesday, among them Naval Captain R, head of the naval intelligence unit who was reprimanded by the IDF Chief of General Staff Dan Halutz, pursuant to faulty intelligence information that contributed to a missile strike on an INF vessel on July 14th, 2006.
The promotion was previously approved by Halutz and Chief of the Israeli Navy Vice Admiral David Ben Bashat.
Naval Captain R will soon be promoted to Rear Admiral, Lower Half and take command of a naval base in Haifa.
IDF sources explained that the reprimand does not prevent promotion and that the officer in question is respected, with an impressive military past. They added that, from a legal perspective, such a reprimand could not prevent promotion.
Nonetheless, there were some raised eyebrows among officers in the IDF Ground Forces, saying the promotion was bizarre.
"It's jarring that an officer who was reprimanded by the Chief of Staff for an incident that's considered a major intelligence failure and that led to the deaths of four of our soldiers, is promoted so quickly,"
"Even if he is a good officer, his promotion needed to wait for a while," they added.
