Prime Minister Olmert in mid-life crisis has his eyes 'done'

Ehud Olmert spent 40 minutes in a private clinic undergoing plastic surgery for an eyelift (blepharoplasty) on Friday afternoon after his return from China.

The Prime Minister did not inform Knesset members or the press about his plans before the procedure. However, he made an announced about the operation during the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday.

Because the eyelift required only local anesthesia, Olmert was not required to turn over his authority as Prime Minister to Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.

The Prime Minister is not obligated by law to inform the public about his health condition, although such a bill has been under discussion in Knesset recently.

The proposal would be an amendment to the law regarding candidates for prime minister and would require candidates to submit a report on their medical condition, about one month before elections.

The amendment was proposed following Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke last year, which left him suddenly in a vegetative state.

Prime Minister Olmert, who has a passion for fine pens and owns an extensive collection, has come under ridicule by the Israeli public for a posh lifestyle that is far out of reach for most Israelis. The Prime Minister, now the subject of yet another corruption inquiry, has been a government employee for almost all of his professional life and has not explained the source of his wealth.
