Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's coalition government no longer has public support, charged opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu while calling for early elections Wednesday, reported Ynetnews.
"We need to hold elections," stated the Likud leader. "Most of the public feels a loss of confidence in the government, and now the time has come for justice."
This loss of confidence is in no doubt related to the numerous scandals involving public officials, including Prime Minister Olmert himself, and the generally acknowledged mishandling of last summer's Second Lebanon War.
In addition to his accusation that Olmert mishandled the war, Netanyahu further charged that he impeded the State Comptroller's investigation into the handling of the home front during the war with Hizbollah.
"How can the government draw lessons if it is refusing to hear about them? We need to change this government," stated Netanyahu to reporters at the Knesset.
Earlier this week State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss slammed Olmert for failing to respond to a series of questions sent to him after he refused to testify in person about the government's success in meeting the home front's needs.
Netanyahu cited another example of weakness in Olmert's government through the Prime Minister's allegedly deteriorating relationship with Defense Minister Amir Peretz, despite their constant denial of media reports that their relationship has gone sour.
A dispute between the two about unpaid wages to local cabinet employees forced the postponement of a cabinet meeting Tuesday.
"The prime minister and Peretz are symbols of the failures of the sinking ship... The ship never sailed anywhere and it is turning around itself in stormy waters," concluded Netanyahu. |
