According to a Hamas spokesman, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas does not have the full power to negotiate with Israel and Abbas' meetings with Prime Minister Olmert are "pointless," the World Net Daily reported.
Furthermore, the spokesman said that Hamas will ignore any agreements reached between the two parties. The unity government formed by the Palestinians in February stipulated that Hamas has the right to veto any agreement made with Israel.
During an interview with the Iranian TV station al-Alam, Hamas spokesperson in Gaza Muhammad Saleh Taha said, "These meetings [between Abbas and Olmert] are pointless, and do nothing to further the Palestinian cause."
"We will not accept any negotiations with the occupier on the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights. [Hamas leaders] stressed that they had reservations about giving [Abbas] full authority in the negotiations," Taha continued.
"In the strongest of terms, we oppose such negotiations and everything that will come out of it. We, the Hamas movement, will not agree to it ... The government platform is not the platform of Hamas, the Islamic resistance movement ... Hamas will not relinquish its platform of resistance," Taha said.
Taha clarified that Hamas would "definitely" reject any agreement made between Abbas and Olmert.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice proposed biweekly meetings between Olmert and Abbas during her visit to the region last month as a forum for discussing security issues and as a confidence-building measure between the parties. |
