Defense Minister Amir Peretz is considering submitting his resignation within the next two days due to pressure from his faction, the Labor party, Israel Radio reported on Wednesday.

This report came after Peretz told Haaretz on Monday that the Winograd report showed him in a good light by claiming Peretz had shown more understanding during the war than more experienced officials and, therefore, it was not necessary for him to resign.

Peretz went on to say he had produced a major achievement in the Lebanon war and added that although the media is hassling him now, he is convinced that the truth about his conduct would come out, Haaretz reported.

The Winograd Committee report faults Peretz with a lack of knowledge and experience necessary to be an effective defense minister. However, according to Peretz, this should be viewed as a positive thing, rather than a deficiency.

Peretz said to Haaretz, "My lack of experience is a fact. I came in with minimal security knowledge. But I see this as an advantage, not a drawback. Everyone who comes in with extensive knowledge is trapped in a conception. He is part of the system. There is no chance he will present an alternative."

If Peretz does decide to resign, the move will likely add strength to efforts within Olmert's coalition and the Kadima party to force Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to quit.

But by evening, pundits were betting that Peretz would try to stick it out in the government at least till the Labor primaries at the end of the month, when he is expected to lose by a landslide.
