Thousands of Palestinian protesters rioted and clashed with Egyptian security forces at the Rafah Crossing Tuesday, demanding that the crossing be opened to ease the effects of Israel's closure of Gaza. Palestinians reported that 50 female rioters were injured, 15 of them suffering gunshot wounds. The Egyptian security forces fought off the rioters, beating them with clubs and using dogs and water hoses to push them back. Several Palestinians were arrested.
Meanwhile, near the Erez Crossing on the other side of Gaza's border, Arab MKs demonstrated with hundreds of other Arabs, protesting Israel's closure of the Strip. During the demonstration, Arab Knesset Member Ahmad Tibi (United Arab List-Ta'al) told MK Effie Eitam (National Union-National Religious Party) that he was "a vile murderer of civilians."
"The right-wing protesters, led by Eitam are war-mongerers, they want the crisis to continue and seek to perpetuate the current situation," exclaimed Tibi.
"I don't remember sanctions like these imposed on a civilian population. This sort of thing cannot be allowed to happen in the 21st century and I urge both sides to declare an immediate ceasefire, to stop the attacks and remove the civilians on both sides from the cycle of violence."
Representatives of right-wing parties stood and shouted derogatory chants toward Tibi, saying he should stay in Gaza. Eitam responded: "Ahmad Tibi is a traitor, and along with (former MK) Azmi Bishara's friends standing across from us, he is trying to weaken the State of Israel.
Eitam said: "It suffices to see MK Ahmad Tibi and [former Balad chairman] Azmi Bishara's friends standing here with Palestinian flags and weakening the State of Israel, which is doing all it can to fight Palestinian terror. We have come here to fight for the sanity of the State of Israel and for the lives of Sderot residents."
