Haaretz reports that fraud squad detectives on Tuesday questioned American real estate mogul Sheldon Adelson in connection with the latest Olmert corruption investigation. Adelson, 73, earned his fortune developing huge hotel, convention and gambling properties in Las Vegas and in Macau. The police asked the billionaire whether Olmert had requested that he acquire for his hotels mini-bars marketed by the key witness in the probe, American Jewish businessman Morris Talansky, known to Olmert cronies as "The Laundry Man," from whom the prime minister is suspected of illicitly accepting large sums of cash.
Haaretz also reported that police Monday questioned U.S. "Slim-Fast" billionnaire Daniel Abrahams in connection with the affair. Earlier Tuesday, National Fraud Unit detectives raided the Ministry of Trade and Industry trying to find documents in the case.
Because some of the donations by Talansky are believed to have taken place during Olmert's 10-year tenure as mayor of Jerusalem, police raided the offices of the Jerusalem municipality, also searching for evidence in the probe. Detectives Monday were seeking evidence that during his tenure as mayor , Olmert had given Talansky benefits or other assistance in exchange for bribes. Police are also looking for material indicating that Olmert had instructed city officials to act for Talansky even after Olmert left the mayor's office to become industry, trade and employment minister.
Olmert is suspected, among other things, of using his influence to pressure Jerusalem officials to place speed bumps on the street where Talansky's children and grandchildren live at Talansky's request. |
