Israeli's attorney general has decided to indict the son of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on charges of raising illegal contributions for his father's primary election campaign, an Israeli television station reported Thursday.
Channel Two TV said Attorney General Meni Mazuz would file the indictment next month against Omri Sharon, 40, a member of parliament from his father's ruling Likud Party.
It said the indictment would allege that Sharon established illegal fictitious companies to funnel cash to his father's primary election campaign in 1999. In the primaries, Sharon was selected as Likud Party leader and went on to defeat Prime Minister Ehud Barak in general elections in 2001. He was re-elected in 2003.
Ministry of Justice spokesman Jacob Galanti would not confirm the report.
"No decision has yet been reached, but when it is we will publish it," he said.
The Channel Two report said the indictment against Sharon would contain several counts, one of which was punishable by imprisonment.
Last year Mazuz decided against indicting Ariel Sharon on charges of taking bribes from an Israeli businessman, overturning a recommendation from the state attorney.
