Labor MK Ben-Eliezer: Destroy settler homes
By israelinsider staff and partners  June 5, 2005

Despite the prevailing attitude towards the razing of homes in his party (Labor), Ben-Eliezer believes that the homes of settlers should be destoyed after they are evacuated. The move is necessary because there is no one that can take over the homes in an orderly manner, the minister said.

"I wish there was someone who would purchase them," Ben-Eliezer said, but since there is not, "we therefore we need to raze those homes -- and do it quickly and painfully.

"There are those who think that the process of evacuation means you get up and leave and everything is over," the minister added. "But the IDF would remain in the area for many days to ensure the process is undertaken in an orderly manner. The moment the homes are left, either (Palestinian) Rafah residents would charge at them en masse, or settler supporters would attempt to gain entry."

Ben-Eliezer said the difference between him and his fellow party members is that "all my friends, with all due respect, are talking about theoretical formulae, while I know the reality of implementing the evacuation."

The minister noted he is not driven by emotional considerations, and said it is important to undertake steps that minimize national damage.

"The problem is how to treat the settlers with the required amount of sensitivity," he said. "We should do everything to spare them the trauma. Even if their path is not my path, I want to hug them and help them as much as possible to deal with the evacuation."
