In his first speech to the Knesset since resigning on Sunday, MK Binyamin Netanyahu used fiery language in an attempt to rally the support of other MKs to join the struggle against the "evil" disengagement plan. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon reminded Netanyahu that he supported the disengagement plan on at least two occasions, suggesting that his sudden opposition was self rather than ideologically motivated. In any case, said Sharon, Netanyahu's timing couldn't be worse.
"Only we in the Knesset are able to stop this evil. Everything that the Knesset has decided, it is also capable of changing," said Netanyahu. "I am calling on all those who grasp the danger: Gather strength and do the right thing. I don't know if the entire move can be stopped, but it still might be stopped in its initial stages."
"[Don't] give [the Palestinians] guns, don't give them rockets, don't give them a sea port, and don't give them a huge base for terror," he continued.
Netanyahu also criticized the "very bad" deal with Egypt to deploy 750 border guards along the Philadelphi route.
In the meantime, Sharon, in an interview with Channel 1 TV said that the former finance minister's resignation, was personally motivated.
"I don't know why he quit. He backed the disengagement plan once or twice," said Sharon, cynically. "One thing I can say: Quitting a week before the most complex, most difficult move in the State of Israel's history -- the disengagement plan -- I would not say this evasion warrants a medal of honor."
