Israel will begin to respond to Palestinian rocket fire with pinpoint attacks, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement Wednesday.
The decision to respond, after weeks without response to multiple Palestinian attacks, came after two teenage boys were severely injured by rockets which struck the beleaguered border town of Sderot Tuesday night.
The Prime Minister's Office released a statement saying that the IDF will take limited action but that, "Simultaneously, Israel will continue to preserve the cease-fire."
The Prime Minister did not elaborate on how he would take action against the rockets while 'preserving' the ceasefire, which has been breached by more than 60 Palestinian rocket firings.
Today's decision to authorize a "pinpoint" response to the attacks came after prolonged pressure on the Prime Minister from the political and military echelons.
Nearly all levels of the defense establishment, including the dovish Defense Minister, Amir Peretz, expressed calls for action.
One senior defense official called the Israeli government's lack of response 'unethical' in so far as the inaction was endangering the lives of citizens for the sake of political maneuvering.
Although some Palestinian factions have already declared the ceasefire to be over, the Israeli government, under the command of Prime Minister Olmert, continued to act as if it were still in effect.
Olmert recently met with Palestinian president and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas and promised the Palestinian leader funds and major security concessions such as the easing of security at checkpoints. |
