Border Guard officers operating in the Samaria city of Jenin Wednesday killed Islamic Jihad commander Ashraf Saadi and two of his aides, Mahmoud Abu Nasa and Daud Jabli.

Security officials said the head of the Islamic Jihad in the city opened fire at the officers, hitting one in the shoulder and lightly wounding him. The officers returned fire, killing the three men.

Palestinian reports said the men were sitting in a car when a black vehicle passed and lethal gunshots were fired. They claimed that one of those killed in the incident was a civilian who was driving the Islamic Jihad members.

Witnesses added that two of the men were killed on the spot and the third, Sa'adi, exited the car and tried to run but was shot and killed, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The army discounted this account, saying troops had tried to arrest Sa'adi in a hospital parking lot, but he opened fire at them. Troops then returned fire, killing the three terrorists, the IDF said.

According to the security officials, the men were members of an Islamic Jihad cell that tried to carry out a suicide bombing in southern Tel Aviv last week. The attack was thwarted when Israeli security forces caught a would-be bomber, who was from the Jenin area, in a Bat Yam apartment.

Earlier Wednesday, Palestinian sources reported that IDF forces returned to Nablus after withdrawing from the West Bank town on Tuesday.

The IDF said the activity there, in which forces are operating against terror infrastructure, is not limited in time and scope.

Five Qassam rockets land in Israel
Five Qassams were fired toward Israel from the northern Gaza Strip Wednesday shortly after the IDF operation in Jenin.

No injury or damage was caused in any of the incidents. The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Two Qassams landed in open fields near Sderot, one landed near a kibbutz in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council in the Negev and two landed south of Ashkelon.

Israel's southern communities on alert for fear of retaliation after Wednesday morning's Border Guard operation in Jenin.
