Responding to the recent barrage of nearly 30 rockets launched into the Negev since Tuesday, the Israel Air force attacked the Hamas headquarters near Rafah in Gaza. IAF helicopters fired three missiles which killed four and wounded 30, Palestinian medical sources said.
The IAF attack came on the fourth day of violent factional clashes in the Gaza Strip, which have claimed 41 lives, rendering obsolete the new cease-fire that PA Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh announced had been reached between Fatah and Hamas Tuesday night.
Israel has until now maintained a policy of restraint since a truce was reached with the PA in 2006, the IAF attack being the first of its kind since that agreement was reached. Before now, the IDF had not targeted a Hamas base, but had been operating only against Qassam cells, which send rockets repeatedly into Israel's south.
Since Tuesday, nearly 30 Qassams have landed in Southern Israel, seriously injuring one and moderately to lightly injuring approximately 30 others.
According to the IDF's Spokesperson Unit, "Following the ongoing terror attacks of Hamas and the terror organizations against the State of Israel, the IDF attacked a Hamas command post in Rafah in a joint operation of the Central Command and the Israel Air Force.
"The IDF will continue to operate against the terror groups in order to provide security for the people of Israel," he said.
According to the IDF, the Hamas target was used to plan terrorist attacks. |
