In an effort to quell continuing rocket attacks to Israel's south, the security cabinet Sunday decided to increase military action against Hamas leadership, including targeted killings and directed attacks on Qassam launching crews, but declined a large-scale operation in Gaza.
The cabinet also called for a diplomatic campaign to explain Israel's actions to the international community.
"It was decided to allow the defense establishment to increase the operational steps aimed at putting a stop to the Qassam attacks and harming the terror infrastructure that enables the shooting," said a statement from the Prime Minister's office after the meeting.
"At this point, the operational activity will focus on Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets, who are responsible for the current escalation. If the agreed-upon moves do not bring about the desirable calm, the cabinet will convene again to consider further, more drastic moves," the statement continued
IAF Action
Four Palestinians were killed by Israel Air Force operations in Gaza over Saturday night.
Three were killed by an airstrike on a car in Gaza City. The other was killed when the IAF targeted a rocket-firing squad that had just launched a Qassam into Israel, reported Palestinian medical and security officials.
The IAF also struck two Hamas weapons workshops and another of the Islamic Jihad. No one was injured in these attacks.
In a separate incident, the IAF reported fired at a car in Gaza city but missed, injuring one bystander according to Palestinian medical officials.
According to the Jerusalem Post, at least 15 Palestinians were killed since the IDF's operation in Gaza to counter Qassam attacks began Thursday.
