An Israeli man was killed, making the second Qassam fatality in less than a week, and another was wounded Sunday, when a Qassam rocket fired from Gaza directly hit a car the town of Sderot.
The man, identified as Hod Hasharon resident Oshri Oz, 36, crashed into a wall after the rocket struck his car, but managed to get out of the vehicle and take a number of steps before collapsing, wounded in the neck by shrapnel. He was evacuated to the Medical Center in Ashkelon, and later died of his wounds.
According to Army Radio, Oz's wife, who is pregnant with their third child, knew her husband was wounded only after seeing footage of the attack on the internet.
The radio said several additional civilians were treated for shock.
Hamas took responsibility for the attack, which brought the day's rocket total to four.
Two Qassam rockets hit Israel earlier Sunday, one landing on a Sderot community center building near a swimming pool causing property damage and the other near a kibbutz in the western Negev. Neither of those two rockets caused casualties.
Because of the constant rocket threat, Sderot students are preparing to continue classes in different cities.
Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal requested that Education Minister Yuli Tamir end the current school year and have students begin next year a month early.
On Saturday, 10 Qassams hit Israel, one striking an apartment building putting many people into shock.
Over the past 10 days, Israel has operated in Gaza, including many targeted strikes, killing 48, in an attempt to stop daily rocket barrages on Israel's south. |
