Ten Qassams were fired into Israel Monday, lightly wounded one, as the friends and relatives attended the funeral of Oshri Oz, the second Israeli to be killed in less than a week by rocket fire.
Three rockets landed this morning in the western Negev, injuring one, as Defense Minster Amir Peretz went to his hometown of Sderot to vote in the Labor Party primaries.
Many of the rockets fell on open areas, causing little damage. One hit a cemetery and another landed near a horse stable.
Despite school reopening in Sderot for first through ninth graders after two weeks of closures due to the continuing Qassams, few students returned to classes.
According to Ynetnews, only 811 of Sderot's 3,000 students attended school Monday, and only 161 of the city's 900 preschoolers resumed lessons.
Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal's request to end the city's school year early was rejected by the Education Ministry Sunday, saying that it would cause more harm than good.
"Pedagogically speaking, it is neither appropriate nor correct to end the school year in Sderot now. There has never been a case where the school year ended a month early," stated Education Minister Yuli Tamir.
"There will be no benefit if the pupils sit in an unprotected home, bored and frightened. The teachers continue to give assignments to the pupils, and there are marathon sessions in locations outside the town in preparation for the matriculation exams," she said.
"The public school system has not stopped functioning because of the crisis. We are under no illusions that if Qassams fall near the pupils they will continue their routine without interruption, but we are trying to offer the best possible solutions," Tamir added.
Qassams take second fatality in less than a week
Friends and relatives attended the funeral Monday of Oshri Oz, 36, who was killed yesterday by a Qassam in Sderot.
His funeral was held in Petah Tikvah.
Oz was killed Sunday, the second Qassam fatality in less than a week, and another was wounded, when a Qassam rocket fired from Gaza directly hit a car the town of Sderot.
Oz, from Hod Hasharon, crashed into a wall after the rocket struck his car, but managed to get out of the vehicle and take a number of steps before collapsing, wounded in the neck by shrapnel. He was evacuated to the Medical Center in Ashkelon, and later died of his wounds.
According to Army Radio, Oz's wife, who is pregnant with their third child, knew her husband was wounded only after seeing footage of the attack on the internet.
The radio said several additional civilians were treated for shock.
Hamas took responsibility for the attack, which brought the day's rocket total to four.
Over the past 10 days, Israel has operated in Gaza, including many targeted strikes, killing 48, in an attempt to stop daily rocket barrages on Israel's south. |
